Beginning at the end of the 14th Century, the Renaissance created a new type of man, triggering economic, scientific, technical, religious, social and cultural developments that are unique in history. Never before have culture, economics and science developed so rapidly within one century as during the Renaissance. But what was the catalyst for it, what is the "Renaissance factor"? The Renaissance is an epoch unique in human history: Never before have art, culture, economics and science developed so rapidly within a single century. We search for the "Renaissance factor", that combination of influences that triggered a pivotal period in history. It is a journey through time from Ancient Rome to the Crusades and the Black Death in the 14th century, events that defined the developments of the Renaissance. We travel with Michelangelo to the major construction site that was to become St. Peter’s Basilica, to the banking houses of the Medicis and the workshop of Johannes Gutenberg. We examine some of the many innovations of the Renaissance such as linear perspective, the printing press and double-entry bookkeeping. We ask what these achievements mean to us today and how - almost half a millennium later - we continue to benefit from the "Renaissance factor." And we delve deeper with the help of spectacular reenactments and our "special investigators" - modern-day trendsetters, scientists, business tycoons, fashion designers and artists. In which John Green teaches you about the European Renaissance. European learning changed the world in the 15th and 16th centuries, but was it a cultural revolution, or an evolution? We'd argue that any cultural shift that occurs over a couple of hundred years isn't too overwhelming to the people who live through it. In retrospect though, the cultural bloom in Europe during this time was pretty impressive. In addition to investigating what caused the Renaissance and who benefitted from the changes that occurred, John will tell you just how the Ninja Turtles got mixed up in all this. The Renaissance was a cultural revitalization that spread across Europe, and had repercussions across the globe, but one smallish city-state in Italy was in many ways the epicenter of the thing. Florence, or as Italians might say, Firenze, was the home to a seemingly inordinate amount of the art, architecture, literature, and cultural output of the Renaissance. Artists like Michelangelo, Leonardo daVinci, Sandro Boticelli, and many others were associated with the city, and the money of patrons like the Medici family made a lot of the art possible. Today you'll learn about how the Renaissance came to be, and what impact it had on Europe and the world. Our Sources: Hunt, Lynn et al. The Making of the West: Peoples and Cultures, 6th ed. 'Postmen: roots and culture!'

Renaissance title track from the classic album, this is a full blown symphonic rock epic. Listen and enjoy! Lyrics : Travel the days of freedom Roads leading everywhere Come with me now and show how you care Follow the dying embers Cross on the paths that they lay Breath of the past the earths yesterday Clear your mind maybe you will find That the past is still turning Circles sway echo yesterday Ashes burning ashes burning Colours are fading starlight Silver the way to find Walking the shadows, there in our mind Changing the order slowly Leaving the mist of time Fingers are holding fragments of mine Clear your mind maybe you will find That the past is still turning Circles sway echo yesterday Ashes burning ashes burning Imagine the burning embers They glow below and above Your sins you won't remember And all you'll find there is love Ashes are burning brightly The smoke can be seen from afar So now you're seeing how far Ashes are burning the way Ashes are burning the way
We are adept at the avoidance of pain and suffering - we push it away, we pretend it’s not there. And we keep ourselves busy so that we don’t have time to sit and reflect - when bored, we surf social media - when we feel down, we go shopping or watch TV. But running keeps us stuck in spiraling patterns of despair and hopelessness. And while we may not be responsible for causing the pain, we can be responsible for ending it. And to admit to that and own up to that is a humbling thing to do. You create an opportunity for growth and expansion in your life by taking accountability. You let go of your ego’s dominance over your actions and decisions, and start listening more carefully to that intuitive voice inside. To run from pain is to run from life itself. Because by embracing difficulty and the challenges it presents, is how we grow and improve as humans. So let’s learn to accept it as a part of life. It's this that will make us whole again. The world is more connected than it's ever been before. We can communicate instantly with our friends and family who live miles apart, thanks to the power of social media. And yet... why do so many of us still feel lonely? Feeling lonely is a normal human experience - it is something we all go through. And it's not simply a function of being alone. You can feel lonely in a crowd. Because loneliness is a feeling of being alienated from others, not feeling understood or connected - it’s a feeling that something is missing. But loneliness is also a message that our body sends us, letting us know that we are important, and we need to become friends with ourselves again. When we feel isolated or alone, we can choose to have compassion for ourselves. We can recognise our emotions without judging them. When we accept where we are at and what we are struggling against, without berating ourselves, we can then begin to change. In order to defeat loneliness, we have to listen to its message - You are complete, nobody is needed, you are enough! Filmed in Groot-Marico, South Africa.
