We visited Hokkaido during winter, beginning Feb 2023, with heavy snow days and average temperature from -12C to highest was 5C. What should I prepare for winter in Hokkaido? Layer yourself with thermal clothing, waterproof warm jacket (snow jacket is very useful), snow waterproof boots (trust us, the road is SO slippery) and warm scarf, gloves and beanies. Even if you don't go skiing or snowboarding (like us), bring snow jacket or snow boots as the snow can be really heavy. 00:00 Intro 00:26 How to get to Sapporo? 1) You can get to Sapporo via shinkansen or bullet train or domestic flight from Tokyo. We decided to take domestic flight because it was cheaper than shinkansen. If you buy the JR Rail Pass then it might be worth the effort to travel via bullet train despite longer travel time. 2) How to get around Sapporo? We got Hokkaido Rail Pass that cover all JR Hokkaido lines, available for 5D or 7D. You can buy the ticket from Pelago: 🤍 with discount code: PEL15NAH You can also hire car rather than public transport, very useful if you travel to other cities. 00:56 Where to stay in Sapporo? 3) We stayed at Onsen Ryokan Yuen Sapporo because we love onsen! For first time traveler, we suggest to stay around Susukino, Odori, or Sapporo station. There are plenty of restaurants, cafe, bar and accommodation around this area. The best advice to choose hotel/accommodation in Japan is to stay near the train station if you are not driving. 01:28 Must try food in Sapporo: Miso Ramen 4) Hokkaido ramen in Sapporo that you need to try is Ebisoba Ichigen - miso ramen with pork and prawn broth, super delicious. 03:53 Visit Sapporo Mt Moiwa Ropeway 5) Best time to visit is during sunset and stay until the city lights come alive, amazing view of Sapporo city. Hokkaido is known for its great seafood and while in the city of Sapporo within Hokkaido, it would be great to try the food local to the region. And what's best in Sapporo? ... I believe that would be the beer, the ramen, and of course, the crab! As luck would have it, after visiting (and sampling at) the Sapporo beer museum, I has fortunately enough to find an all you can eat Hokkaido Seafood Buffet with HotPot or Grill... (you have be choose one). But what's unique about this buffet is that for $47 USD, you get all you can eat crab! From the famous Hokkaido Chestnut Crab (or Hairy Crab), to snow crab, and mountains of fresh King Crab! And while the crabs are the star of the buffet, there is so much more to offer from the huge scollops, freshly made crispy tempura, to the stews and live stations. There is one catch though... you only get 70 minutes! While it should be sufficient time for most, it was a challenge to film and dine under the clock! It was a rush, but fun and exciting! Hi everyone! I went on a 7 day trip to Hokkaido this week, where I explored the city of Sapporo, Otaru as well as the beautiful flower fields in Furano and Biei :). The first part of the trip was a business trip, where I had some work in Sapporo, but then I took a few days off to explore more of Hokkaido. Hokkaido was one of my bucket list destinations in Japan, and was definitely worth the hype! I had some of the most delicious food and saw some spectacular scenery. Throughout our trip we ate a few delicious Japanese food meals (there area few more videos you can watch from Hokkaido here as well: ), but here are a few great restaurants we tried in Sapporo. Mt. Moiwa Ropeway - First, one morning we took the ropeway to the top of the mountain to get a view. Unfortunately there was no view, but it was still beautiful. Sapporo Junren - Miso ramen is one of the ultimate types of ramen that you’ll find all over Japan, but that originates in Hokkaido. In Sapporo there are many options to eat miso ramen, but I chose Sapporo Junren, a little outside the center of the city. The ramen, and I got extra chashu and an egg, and the spicy version, was incredibly rich and butter, and flavorful. Special miso ramen - 1,330 JPY ($11.93) Nijo Market - Daiichi Kaisenmaru - Nijo market is a small seafood market in Sapporo and we when we were there, we stepped inside Daiichi Kaisenmaru, a small Uncle and Aunty family run seafood rice bowl restaurant. The service is so friendly and they serve up delicious seafood rice bowls. Mix seafood bowl - 3,800 JPY ($34.07) Soup Curry Treasure - You’ll find Japanese curry all over Japan, but in Sapporo there are known for soup curry - a Japanese food I had never tried before. I tried Soup Curry Treasure (same place as the famous GARAKU). You can choose spicy level 1 - 40, so I had to try the 40. It was pretty spicy, but a good spicy. Price - 1,320 JPY ($11.84) Hanamaru Sushi - Sapporo Station - Finally, to finish off this Japanese food tour in Sapporo, Hokkaido, we were at Sapporo Station and stopped at what is considered one of the best quality conveyor belt sushi restaurants in Japan. The seafood was fresh and generout, and if you can wait out the line, it’s well worth eating at when you’re in Sapporo.
