In this video, I talk about whether or not UAD Plug-ins are worth buying in 2022 for mixing? I also talk using the Universal Audio Apollo Twin for recording, using UAD Plug-ins in real-time. If you need help buying gear for your home studio or learning how to use that gear, click the link to schedule a FREE Zoom call with me. 🤍 In my opinion, UAD Plug-ins are not necessary in 2022. Here's why 1. Computers built in the last five years have no need for DSP. It's an outdated model. 2. The Competitors have caught up. Ten years ago UAD plugins were a step ahead. They model famous hardware in a way that their competitors had not. Now there are many companies like Arturia, Plugin Alliance, Slate Digital and too many others to name that are just as good. That leads to the next reason UAD is just outmatched. 3. They require Universal Audio hardware like an Apollo Audio interface or a UAD Satellite to even use their plug-ins. What's worse is these devices come with DSP (Digital Signal Processor) Chips and you need a lot of them to use their plug-ins to mix. There are only two other companies that I know of that use this antiquated model, Avid and Antelope Audio both have interfaces with DSP chips that house plugins. I have an Apollo Twin Quad, a UAD Quad Satellite, and a Firewire Quad Satellite and I still couldn't use exclusively UAD Plugins on a mix of more than 20 tracks! I still run out of DSP and have to pick my spots and make sure, I use my favorite UAD plug-ins upfront. That leads to point Four. 4. The Competitors don't have a limit to how many plugins you can use in a given mix. The only thing limiting your plug-in usage nowadays is your computer, and with a modern computer, you should have no issue, unless you're running over 100 tracks per song. I don't recommend investing your plug-in budget into the UA money pit, but I will say, I still love my Universal Audio Apollo Twin Quad for Recording. Is recording with UAD Plug-ins in Real-Time with Zero Latency worth it?... Yes! I love it because it replaces needing crazy expensive hardware. I not saying that UAD plug-ins are as good as the real deal Hardware, but for my purposes, it's close enough. Most Home Studio owners will never own a real LA2A, 1176, or Neve Preamp, so.. who cares how close it is to real hardware. So do I recommend Universal Audio Interfaces? YES, but I would get an interface with at least a Quad-core. You will always need more DSP with their plug-ins. If you read this far, thank you! Davvero un peccato che siano relegati ad un hardware così vecchio "i dsp shark sono veramente dell'anteguerra" Speriamo in una nuova generazione di dsp che ci permetterà di usare in numero maggiore questi plugs senza sfondare il conto in banca! What is Universal Audio and UAD Plug-ins and should you care? - Universal Audio is company that started in 1958 building recording equipment…Hardware - They created famous compressor like the LA2A and the 1176 and countless other pieces of famous gear Now they make Audio Interfaces with computer chips in them that house and run their plugins. They still create hardware, but their main claim to make is software emulations of vintage recording gear called plug-ins. The catch is you need a Universal Audio Interface or UAD Satellite to run their plugins. These devices have a certain number of Digital Signal Processors or DSP chips that dictate how many of their plugins you can run. Audio Interfaces allow you to connect things like microphones and guitar cables to a computer and record via USB most commonly. It also has outputs typically and allow Studio Monitor Speakers, computer speakers or headphones to listen to the recorded or real-time incoming audio to play through the computer.
